Earthquake Story

At 8:12 a.m. Monday morning an earthquake rocked San Fransisco Bay area killing and injuring civilians.

"I was eating my breakfast when the room started rolling," Hayward resident Mike Beamer said. "I dove under the table just as I heard an explosion outside and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That's when the screaming started across the street."

The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred on the Hayward Fault.

"It was a strong one," scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park Penny Gertz said.

McHenry's Auto Shop Supply had partially collapsed causing two deaths and six injured.

"My shop was left a mess," McHenry's Auto Supply owner Richard Rich said. "Not to mention the deaths and injury of my customers."

Firemen, police and American Red Cross workers attended the seen to provide help.

"Twenty-one fire personnel, twelve police and five American Red Cross workers responded to the building collapse, with some arriving within four minutes of the quake," public information officer Jennifer Vu said.

Three of the six injured were hospitalized at Hayward General Hospital.

"Three of the injured are now hospitalized at Hayward General Hospital," Vu said. "Thankfully no other injures have been reported in Hayward.

The auto shop was stabilized by firefighters using ropes.

"We are lucky we got there when we did," firefighter James Bo said. "We had to cap a gas line after detecting a gas leak."

However, Hayward was not the only area that felt the quake.

"People as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding felt the quake," Gertz said.
